Bradford gets extra funding to cut crime and anti-social behaviour

Bradford Council is getting a share of a £1 million regional grant to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the district.

The Safer Streets fund, run by the Home Office, provides funding for projects which reduce anti-social behaviour, violence against women and girls and neighbourhood crime. A successful joint bid by the Mayor of West Yorkshire, West Yorkshire Police, Bradford Council, Calderdale Council, Kirklees Council, Leeds City Council and Wakefield Council has resulted in a £1m injection into this work across the region.

Bradford’s £185,000 share of the fund will support Safer Bradford (Bradford Community Safety Partnership*) priorities. These include tackling nuisance motorbikes and quad bikes, safety of women and girls, anti-social behaviour hotspots, safety in the city centre and the nighttime economy. The district will also benefit from a share of the wider West Yorkshire Police funding pot for forensic marking and target hardening.

Cllr Abdul Jabar, Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said: “This extra funding is extremely welcome and gives the work already being done by us and our partners to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour a much-needed boost. Our successful bid also shows that working together with our neighbouring authorities, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and West Yorkshire Police benefits the whole region. We all have shared goals when it comes to making our streets safer.”

Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “We’re working together to create a safer, fairer region.

“This investment supports a range of projects that will make a real difference in our communities.

“This includes public priorities such as the safety of women and girls, tackling anti-social behaviour and neighbourhood crime.”

Temporary Chief Superintendent Richard Padwell of Bradford District Police said: “This significant injection of funding will benefit priorities across Bradford District which we know are of a concern to residents.

“Tackling anti-social behaviour, dealing with nuisance motorbikes and quad bikes, along with safety in the city centre’s nighttime economy.

“We welcome this investment and by working in partnership with Safer Bradford we together can make the district a better and safer place.”

The Safer Streets Fund launched in 2020 and has so far invested £120 million through four rounds of funding. This recent announcement is the fifth round of funding (SSF5) which was launched in July. Every police force area across England and Wales has been offered up to £1 million to deliver a range of interventions.
