Local industrial decarbonisation project

What is Industrial Decarbonisation?

The word decarbonisation refers to all measures through which a business sector, or an entity such as Bradford Council – reduces its carbon footprint, primarily its greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), in order to reduce its impact on the climate.

Industrial Decarbonisation is applied to the development of low-carbon technologies and infrastructure, increasing industry competitiveness and contributing to the UK’s clean growth.

Bradford Manufacturing Futures

Bradford Manufacturing Futures is a group of manufacturers in the Bradford area who have pledged to a cleaner future by reducing their Greenhouse Gas emissions.

Actions from this group will include the implementation of the Local industrial Decarbonisation Project and other projects beyond.

The Local Industrial Decarbonisation Project (LIDP) is a council led project to help Bradford district meet the Net-zero carbon target by 2038. It targets the high carbon emitting manufacturers in the district that are not regulated.

Background to Bradford Manufacturing Futures

Bradford Manufacturing Futures (BMF) is a local partnership planning a collaborative, progressive and investible approach to decarbonisation and has been granted Local Industrial Decarbonisation funding up to £726,729 from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

Manufacturing, core to Bradford's success over centuries, now faces existential energy cost and decarbonisation challenges. The sector is diverse, with 1,220 businesses accounting for 12.6% of jobs in Bradford District, generating 0.7Mtpa CO2 emissions.

The Local Industrial Decarbonisation Project is led by the BMF and facilitated by Bradford Council and will identify opportunities for decarbonisation across the district in some of the highest emitting manufacturing sectors which produce 52% of the district’s CO2 emissions. This contributes to the 2021-25 District Plan and its commitment to Net Zero by 2038.

The LIDP will run until the end of December 2024, providing a District-wide roadmap for decarbonisation, an investment prospectus for the District and shared learning across manufacturers in the District and West Yorkshire region.

The lead manufacturing partners will work with specialist energy consultants CR Plus, University of Bradford and other local manufacturers, profiling energy use and assessing decarbonisation opportunities across the sectors.

Aims and objectives of the decarbonisation project

The aim is to share the responsibility for low carbon solutions among manufacturers as working together is more effective than targeting individual sites.

Currently, emission data has been gathered from sites by a consultant and low carbon solutions identified for. specific sites. This has been fed into a low carbon specialist to build on this to create a district wide plan for the implementation of these solutions.

The council will aid manufacturers in gaining access to the necessary funding for these solutions.

Low carbon solutions are currently being identified by our contracted consultants. The most significant way to reduce carbon emissions from manufacturers is to switch the fossil fuel they currently rely on to renewable energy sources. Potential ways this could happen are the implementation of individual and shared systems: district heating systems, air source heat pumps, the use of hydrogen gas, solar panels, the use of biogas and wind turbines and others

Who are our key partners?

Bradford Council and partners CR Plus Ltd, the University of Bradford and the following 6 local manufacturers: Produmax Limited, Texfelt Ltd, Teconnex Ltd, Denso Marston Ltd, Solenis UK Industries Ltd, and Calbee Group (UK) Ltd are collaborating to promote the project, identify potential low carbon solutions and map the master plans for the Bradford district.

Does your business want to get involved?

It is crucial to the project we have as many local manufacturers involved as possible. We need your involvement and input.
