Purpose

Regenerating the heritage site at Wrose Hill/Quarry, including adding accessible footpaths, improving biodiversity by creating new wetland features and tree planting, adding new recreational features.

Objectives

  • Transforming the current Wrose Quarry site will increase local biodiversity, boost our climate resilience, and create a new visitor destination for members of the local community.
  • Renovate and renew the footpath network.
  • Improve drainage in key areas to prevent flooding that closes footpaths.
  • Improve biodiversity by creating new wetland features across the site, and installing new scrapes and ponds.
  • Tree planting in and around the site
  • Improve signage at the site including historical interpretation boards and natural history.
  • Install new recreational features including benches and new bike ramps in a dedicated bike area.

Position up to February 2024

2 Ponds have been completed with 2 scrapes. Digger training courses have been completed also with 3 staff fully trained. 181 volunteer work days delivered, 2 extensions of the wetlands also completed. 30 metres of stone pitching (additional paths remediated with another drainage point added). 2ha of public realm improved, 0.4km of access tracks built, stone pitched paths added alongside steps for access to Carr Lane. Boardwalk installed in a boggy area of the woodland, with 350m2 of bike area activity improved. 500 bare root whips have been planted to enlarge the existing block of trees. Expectation that the project will be completed by early November 2023. A section of board walk through the woodland (15 metres) recycled plastic frame to be installed.
