Evidence, data and monitoring
Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA)
There are a number of areas of the Bradford District which suffer from flooding and it is important to understand this potential flood risk and the implications it has for the location of new development.
A Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) provides the key evidence base on flood risk and is an important tool in the planning system for both the preparation of the new Local Plan and in the determination of planning applications.
Level 1 SFRA 2023
The Council has now published a new Level 1 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) as part of the evidence base for the new Local Plan, and for use in the determination of planning applications.
This new SFRA replaces the previous SFRAs from 2014 (for the whole district) and 2015 (for the Bradford City Centre and Shipley and Canal Road Corridor areas). The new SFRA uses up-to-date river modelling data along with the latest planning policy and guidance as set out in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and Planning Practice Guidance.
The main report and appendices can be viewed below:
- Bradford District Level 1 SFRA (2023) Report (PDF)
- Appendix A – Policy and Flood Risk (PDF)
- Appendix B – Functional Floodplain (PDF)
- Appendix C – Hydraulic Model Details (PDF)
The associated flood map data, including the Environment Agency's Flood Map for Planning data, and the extent of Flood Zone 3b (the functional floodplain) is available on an interactive map.
Any site specific Flood Risk Assessment for the purposes of planning applications should be informed by the most up-to-date evidence available and local knowledge of all sources of flood risk. All applicants are advised to consult the Lead Local Flood Authority (the Council): drainage@bradford.gov.uk and Environment Agency to confirm the most up-to-date sources of flood risk relating to their application.
