Open Space Studies
Open space plays an important role in the sustainable development of settlements. These spaces provide a number of quality of life benefits for communities, including providing opportunities to live active and healthy lifestyles, improving physical and mental health, supporting biodiversity and mitigating against climate change.
A number of studies have been prepared to help us understand the level of provision and range of open spaces available across the District.
Open Space Audit (draft) 2021
A new Open Space Audit has been prepared for the District as part of an update of the evidence base for the new Local Plan. The new audit in part replaces the Open Space and Recreation Study from 2006. The new audit is currently shown in draft form as further amendments/updates will be carried out in due course.
The audit provides an up-to-date assessment of the quantity and accessibility of open space within each of the settlements in the District. It also sets out new standards of provision.

An interactive map showing the location of the different open space sites across the District is also available.
Open Space Needs and Demand Assessment (2020)
A study was prepared by consultants Knight, Kavanagh & Page (KKP) in 2020 to assess the needs and demands of open space across the District. It incorporates the findings from the open space survey questionnaire which saw over 2,000 responses from the community, organisations and partners. The report presents the findings of a demand-based study and analyses the views and perceptions of local people towards the provision of open spaces.

Open Space and Recreation Study (2006)
The purpose of this study is to undertake an assessment of quantity and quality of all open spaces and outdoor sport and recreation in line with 'PPG17 - Planning for Open Space, Sport and Recreation' typology and community needs within the District.
Please note that this study was completed in 2006 and was based upon information available at that time.
The study contains the Outdoor Sports Facilities Assessment (and Appendices) and the Open Space Assessment (and Appendices)
