Make a planning application

Planning Portal.Apply online

The easiest way to apply is online using the Planning Portal.

The system will guide you through the whole process, including:

  • choosing the right application form
  • uploading your plans and documents
  • submitting your application
  • paying the fee

You can also buy maps for your application through the Planning Portal "Buy a Plan" service.

Note: some types of applications cannot be submitted online. For these, you can download the correct forms from the Planning Portal instead.

Other ways to apply

You can apply by post if you prefer.

To do this:

You must include:

  • one completed application form
  • your plans
  • any supporting documents.

What you need to include

Your application must include all the correct supporting documents.

Information about what's required (both national and local) is available on the Council's planning application information requirements webpage.

There is also guidance available on how to clearly describe your planning application.

Community Infrastructure Levy

Since 1 July 2017, some developments must pay a charge called the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).

This applies to:

  • residential developments
  • retail warehouses
  • large supermarkets
  • house extensions over 100 square metres

You can find full details about how CIL works on the CIL requirements page.

Fees and charges

You can work out how much your application will cost by using the Planning Portal fee calculator.

Details of planning fees are also available.
