Bradford Council Modern Slavery Statement
Why Does Our Council Have a Modern Slavery Statement?
Modern slavery is happening in the UK right now. It includes forced labour, human trafficking, and exploitation — where people are controlled and made to work against their will, often for little or no pay. It affects industries like construction, cleaning, care, food processing, and hospitality.
What does this have to do with the council?
Your council spends millions of pounds of public money every year buying goods and services from hundreds of suppliers and contractors. That money could — without careful checks — end up funding businesses that exploit vulnerable people, even if unintentionally.
The law says councils must take responsibility for this. Under the Modern Slavery Act 2015, the council is required to publish an annual Modern Slavery Statement explaining what it is doing to make sure slavery and exploitation have no place in its activities or supply chains.
What does the statement cover?
It sets out how the council is working to identify and prevent modern slavery, including how it checks its suppliers, trains its staff to spot the signs, and makes it easy for people to raise concerns.
Why does it matter to you?
Because public money is your money. You have a right to know that the council is spending it responsibly — and not with businesses that profit from the abuse of others.
