The Bradford Clean Air Schools Programme (CASP) is a Bradford Council initiative funded by the Bradford Clean Air Zone (CAZ). Since launch 48 schools successfully applied for grants and have claimed over £400,000 for projects in place to improve air quality around their school.

£4.1 million of Clean Air Zone grant funding is now available for the Bradford Licenced taxi trade to assist with the running costs of a fully electric hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle. Applicants can choose to purchase or take out a long-term lease (minimum 2 years lease at time the grant agreement is signed and returned) to be eligible for the grant.

IQRA Primary Academy school team was announced as being the winners of the IVE Applied Creativity Labs competition to pitch their ideas to reduce air pollution.

To further support the upgrade of vehicles, Bradford Council have now extended the eligibility criteria so that Bradford residents can now apply for part of the £10m funding available to LGVs and minibuses. The funding is available to help residents upgrade their vehicles to meet the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) standards this includes vans, minibuses and motor caravans.

The physical health impacts of air pollution – such as asthma, heart disease and cancers – have been recognised for decades. More recently, researchers are beginning to understand how air pollution can affect the brain and the mind.

Bradford Council is launching a Clean Air Schools programme to improve air quality around schools, this will be the first programme funded with Clean Air Zone revenue. A report on the new Clean Air Schools programme, set to go to the Council’s Executive to be approved on Tuesday, sets out the plans to provide cleaner air for schools via a comprehensive package of engagement, education and awareness raising as well as grants for individual schools.

Children from Shipley CE Primary have taken part in an Applied Creativity Lab workshop to find new ways to reduce air pollution. During a nine-week period the children created and developed their ideas ready to present to an Industry Panel at their school. During this ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event, several groups of children introduced their unique ideas, answered questions and battled it out for points. The winning group is now ready for the grand final pitch event on Clean Air Day in June 2023.

Grant funding for fully electric Bradford licenced taxi vehicles will be available from May 2023 to assist Bradford licensed vehicle proprietors with the purchase, lease or running costs of a fully electric hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle.

The monitoring that took place prior to the CAZ launch and on 2 occasions after the launch (October and November 2022) indicates that there is no significant increase in the percent of commercial traffic across all of the displacement monitoring sites.

Bradford has been praised by England’s top doctor for the way it is improving the community’s health, especially among children, by reducing air pollution.
Professor Sir Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, paid a fact-finding visit to the city in the spring for a first hand insight into the way it is breaking new ground in improving air quality.
In his annual report published yesterday (Thursday December 8), he has heralded the partnership between Bradford Council, the Born in Bradford (BiB) research project based at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and public health teams as an example of best practice.

The process to apply for an exemption is now open for Bradford District residents and businesses with non-compliant vehicles and certain businesses based outside the District. Getting an exemption means that they will not have to pay to drive in the Bradford Clean Air Zone.
