Getting on the road - motorbike or car

Other pages in this section

You need to know the law before you can ride or drive any motor vehicle. Riding/driving is about getting round more easily – it's not just about having fun, it's about being safe too. Inappropriate riding/driving behaviour can be lethal for you and others.

Motorcycles

You first need to get a provisional licence and complete CBT if you want to ride a motorbike.

There are different categories of motorbike - you’ll need to get the right entitlement on your licence and be old enough to do so.

Find out more on the GOV.UK website.

Mopeds

You must first get a provisional licence and complete CBT if you want to ride a moped.

The way moped entitlements are shown on your licence have changed, but you still need to be 16 to ride one.

The rules are different if you already have a car driving licence.

Cars

You need to get a provisional licence if you want to drive a car. Most people can start learning to drive when they’re 17.
