Our Housing Options offices are open from 8.30am to 4.30pm on Monday to Thursday, and 8.30am to 4pm on Friday. If you need help when our offices are closed, please contact our emergency duty team on 01274 381999.
If you’re worried about becoming homeless, you should contact us on 01274 435999. The earlier you contact Housing Options, the better chance we will have of helping you.
Will we be able to help you?
To get help, you need to:
- live in the UK permanently
- have the right to live in the UK
We can only give advice (not housing) if you:
- have limited permission to stay in the UK
- can't claim benefits because you're from another country
- don't usually live in the UK
- are seeking asylum (though you might get temporary housing from the government while your case is reviewed)
Note: If you're staying in the UK illegally, we must report this to authorities.

What happens next?
The Housing Options Service will offer you a free and confidential service. Our specially trained team can help with all sorts of housing related problems. Together we can look at your situation and decide on the best way to help you tackle your problems to enjoy trouble-free housing.
We will carry out a simple options interview to find out how we can help you. Our team have lots of experience in this subject and a network of contacts, and they can help in the following ways:
- Preventing you from becoming homeless
- Helping you to claim all the benefits you’re entitled to
- Helping you to find alternative accommodation
- Working with your landlord on your behalf, and sorting out any problems or issues like rent arrears and repayment plans
- Referring you to supported housing schemes or organising any other support that you might need
- Showing you where to find other agencies and organisations that can help you with problems or worries
- Helping you to find secure private rented accommodation
- Giving you useful advice on things like debt, mortgage arrears, rent arrears, disrepair, overcrowding, under-occupancy, domestic violence
