Land and nature

Emissions baseline

The Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector is almost balanced between emissions and removals, resulting in net emissions of only 0.2% of the total area-wide Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. The key sources of emissions in this sector are from peatland and settlements. The largest removals are from forestry and grasslands.

Managing land and nature

Land and nature are the foundation of our lives, our diets, our economies and our livelihoods. Biodiverse green and blue spaces improve and protect our health, mental health and community wellbeing. Land serves multiple purposes such as food production, nature restoration, carbon storage, renewable energy generation, and flooding alleviation.

How we use our land and safeguard our natural environment is vital to ensuring we have a better, safer, healthier and more sustainable future. A healthy natural environment can reduce the risk of flooding, improve people’s health and wellbeing, as well as maintain healthy soils, clean water and the pollinators needed for our crops – and therefore sustain us.
