Bradford Heritage Action Zone Design Guide
This Shopfront Design Guide has been developed as a result of the Bradford Heritage Action Zone (HAZ).
The guide supports the adopted supplementary planning guidance already in place from Bradford’s local planning authority, including the existing district-wide Shopfront Design Guide.
The guide aims to inspire and support owners, retailers, designers, and others involved in maintaining, repairing, or designing commercial properties. It promotes a high standard of design - one that responds sensitively to Bradford’s distinctive character while contributing to the area’s wider regeneration.
The primary purpose of this guide is to set the benchmark for the quality of works that will be required to secure a grant in the Bradford HAZ. By setting out clear principles on materials, proportions, signage, and security, the guide provides a framework for delivering exemplary projects that enhance the city’s heritage.
Who is the Design Guide for?
Owners
Whether you’re improving your signage or considering a full shopfront upgrade, this guide will help you understand the process, make confident decisions, and unlock the full potential of your building - especially in historic settings. It outlines what to expect at each stage, explains how permissions and professionals fit into the process, and highlights where early planning can reduce risk and cost.
Designers
Use this guide to support early conversations with clients, structure your approach, and ensure no key steps are missed. It’s a useful tool for managing expectations, identifying risks and opportunities, and embedding high-quality design from the outset. Whether you’re producing concept designs, preparing applications, or coordinating delivery, this resource can help align your work with client goals and local authority requirements.
Planners
This guide offers a clear, accessible way to support applicants and promote high-quality, context-sensitive design. It can help demystify the process, signpost what is expected, and encourage early, proactive engagement. In doing so, it supports better quality submissions, reduces the need for reactive redesign, and fosters collaborative working between applicants, professionals, and the local authority.
