We understand that losing a loved one is an extremely difficult time, and there are many practical matters to manage. We are here to support you and make the process as straightforward as possible.

If you let us know about a death as early as you can, we may be able to reduce or amend the Council Tax bill quickly.

Report the death of the owner or resident

What to do when someone dies

When a Council Tax payer passes away, we will need some information about both the person who has died and the property they lived in.

You can provide this information by completing our form now, or calling us on 01274 437866.

Outstanding Council Tax bills after someone dies

If someone else aged 18 or over still lives in the property

They may become responsible for paying Council Tax from the date of death. If they are now the only adult living in the property, they may qualify for a Single Person Discount.

If the property is unoccupied

A property left empty following the death of the owner or tenant may qualify for an exemption.

This exemption applies only if no living person or organisation can be considered the owner except in their role as the executor.

For more information, please see Exemption Class F on our property discounts page.
