Support for carers
Return to Market Overview | Return to the MPS home page
Providing the right support for carers is a key way to prevent, reduce or delay a person’s need for long term services and help maximise independence. Unpaid carers are estimated to contribute over £900 million to the health and care economy in the Bradford District. According to the 2021 census, approximately 9.6% of the population of Bradford (over 52,000) are carers. 3.1% of people provide more than 50 hours of unpaid care a week.
The Council and its partners jointly commission services for adult and young carers to meet the support needs of carers from Carers’ Resource.
What does this mean for Bradford Providers?
For organisations who support Bradford District residents, there are opportunities to support carers through:
- providing personalised support to people who are primary carers for others
- social prescribing of activities for carers and cared for
- being a local community based resource to carers providing reliable, up to date information and advice
- being condition specific specialists and being able to support carers through training that helps them provide better care
- providing opportunities for carers to take a break from their caring role
- as an employer there is an opportunity to support carers as 1 in 5 carers are working carers. Organisations need to become carer aware and adopt carer aware approaches as a way to retain experienced staff
- offering resources for those that need Personal assistants or are looking for Direct Payments
