Hard Ings Road improvement scheme

The Hard Ings Road Improvement scheme has been implemented by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council (CBMDC). The scheme received investment through the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund as part of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal – a £1 billion package of government investment to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region. 

The route is predominantly dual carriageway, except for a short section, known as Hard Ings Road. Consequently, this part of the A650 was a bottleneck for motorists.

The improvements to Hard Ings Road will:

• Reduce congestion by increasing the capacity of the road network.
• Encourage sustainable modes of transport by improving the provision for cyclists and pedestrians.
• Take the opportunity to enhance the quality of the local environment by installing new planting and improving air quality.

Update

December 2022

The construction works for the scheme concluded on 16 October 2020 when the new road layout was opened to traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. Since this time we have been monitoring the performance of the works and this will continue for a number of years.

The current assessments are that the scheme has had the desired outcomes to improve congestion and journey times.

The works have been well received and have been successfully recognised for a number of awards including:

• Institution of civil Engineers Yorkshire & Humber Centenary Award 2022 - Certificate of Commendation for projects £5m and over
• Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation Yorkshire & the Humber Best Large Highways and Transportation Project 2021
