What is a Nationally Registered Park or Garden?

Historic England is responsible for compiling the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. Established in 1983, the Register now includes over 1600 sites, 14 of which are located or partly located within the Bradford District, refer to the list below. Its emphasis is on the design of landscapes, rather than on planting or botanical importance.

By identifying sites which are nationally important for their special historic interest, Historic England seeks to increase awareness of their value and encourage those who own, manage and use them, to treat them with due care and protect them for the future.

Registration is a ‘material consideration’ in the planning process. Therefore, in considering and determining planning applications, the Local Planning Authority will have regard to the impact of proposed developments, which affect the site or its setting, against Policy BH16 of the Replacement Unitary Development Plan (2005). Registration does not impose any additional controls.

What is a Local Historic Park or Garden?

The Local Planning Authority also maintains a list of locally recognised parks and gardens, which do not appear on the national register but are still considered to be of special local interest.

The fact that a site has been identified as being of special local interest is a ‘material consideration’ in the planning process. Therefore, in considering and determining planning applications, the Local Planning Authority will have regard to the impact of proposed developments, which affect the site or its setting, against Policy BH17 of the Replacement Unitary Development Plan (2005).
